Choosing the Right Canvas

One of the questions I’m asked most often is which canvas size to choose. There’s no right or wrong answer. It really comes down to how much of the story you’d like your painting to tell, and how you imagine living with it in your home!

A4 – Intimate & Meaningful

A4 pieces are created either in watercolour on professional watercolour paper, or in acrylic on a small 24×30 cm canvas. This option is perfect if you’re looking for something more intimate or giftable.

What I love about this size is that it allows you to choose two or more different moments rather than just one. Perhaps a quiet portrait of the groom and a separate moment of the bride, or two meaningful parts of the day that each feel special to you.

30 × 40 cm – Simple & Versatile

The 30×40 cm canvas is a lovely middle ground. It gives enough space for expressions, dress details, and a hint of the setting. It has a 3:4 aspect ratio so it’s narrower and is a more budget friendly option while still capturing the moment beautifully and it works well for smaller room or tighter space.

40 × 50 cm vs 40 × 60 cm – My Most Popular Sizes

These are the sizes most couples choose, as they offer the best balance of detail and presence. Both provide a little more scale and impact compared to a 30 × 40 cm canvas, which makes it ideal for display in a living room or as a striking centerpiece. I personally prefer the bigger sizes because the extra space lets me include more details and make the painting feel richer and more immersive.

40×50 cm has a ratio of 4:5. It is a bit more compact and slightly squarer. It’s perfect if you’re after something more intimate, with the main focus on the couple or a specific moment.

40×60 cm has a ratio of 2:3. It is more rectangular and offers more space to include the guests, archiecture and greenery, creating a more cinematic and expansive feel and really capture the atmosphere of the day.

50 × 60 cm – A Statement Piece

If you’d love your painting to be a real focal point in your home, the 50×60 cm canvas is a beautiful option. This size works especially well for grand venues, outdoor settings, or moments where the environment plays an important role in the story.

I alsoI also offer other sizes on request, including square formats, ISO sizes, larger statement pieces or longer, more panoramic compositions to suit your space and vision. If you’re unsure which size would suit your wedding best, I’m always happy to help you decide based on your venue, moment, and how you’d like to display the painting in your home. Popping into an art supply shop to see canvases in person can also be helpful. And wherever you choose to display your painting at home is completely up to you. Just try to avoid direct sunlight and areas with moisture so it stays looking its best for years to come.
